As some of you might already know, about 10 months ago my grandfather was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia. He passed away before noon on Sunday, 13 May 2007. The wake was held on Monday and Tuesday, and yesterday morning he was cremated and his remains interred at Mandai Columbarium. That’s really all I intend to say about that here. Those who need to know more will know …

In no particular order.Pros:Comparatively greater dominance of the English language (not that I’m making a statement about which language is superior, just that I’m far more fluent in English than in any other)No bargaining for almost anythingCleaner, not-so-dry airJaywalking is far less dangerousMuch better food, no matter what my sister saysMuch cleaner toilets, …

Yesterday, while removing my iPod from my bag, I dropped it from a height of about a metre or so, onto a hard rocky floor. While I initially thought that it was undamaged (there was, amazingly, no visible physical damage to the body), I later realised that the LCD screen had been slightly damaged, and I now have two large bunches of stuck pixels. At least, that’s what I …
Yesterday, I bought two 1GB PC5300-667MHz SODIMMs, and replaced the two 512MB sticks in my iMac. I was, understandably, somewhat apprehensive about opening up the iMac and putting in third-party components, but I’m happy to say that the entire process was incredibly pain-free and easy, and OS X runs more smoothly than it ever did before. I think it’s pretty safe …
The official Stardust trailer has just been released. I’m not quite sure what to think about this. Having recently read Stardust again, as well as listened to the audiobook read by Neil Gaiman himself, I’ve become particularly fond of the text of the book. The trailer clearly shows that the movie script deviates from the book quite a lot, and while the movie does …
Penny Arcade alerted me to this trailer for the new Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix game. The last time Square released a Final Mix, I was sorely disappointed to discover that it did not have English text like Final Fantasy X International did, and ended up getting the PAL version of Kingdom Hearts instead. This time around, though, my ability to comprehend Japanese is …
Ever since hearing about Jonathan Coulton’s “Code Monkey” on Net@Nite, I’ve been picking up Jonathan Coulton’s songs. I first heard him on the audiobook version of John Hodgman’s “The Areas of my Expertise”, and never quite realised what a great musician he was until I started listening to his music. He sells his songs cheaply, …
They allow -166 remaining spaces in their classes. They allow students to rent stools to sit outside the classroom to listen to the lecturer. They allow students to rent stools to stand on in the classroom. They allow students to paste pieces of paper all over the tables way before the lesson to indicate that the seats are booked. This is China’s top law school. No …

I was a bit concerned at first to see one of my VCF friends post about being proud of her Singaporean heritage, but I thought maybe it was just because she was away in California on student exchange, and everyone knows that being away from home for extended periods of time tends to play tricks on your mind and make home seem like a better place than it really is. So I thought …
It says something about the efficiency of the MRT system here, or the ineffiency of the bus system here – or maybe both – that it took me the same amount of time to travel from City Hall M …
I’ve known about Twitter for a while, having heard about it from Leo and his gang of TWiTs, but have never paid it much attention thus far. It always sounded like some silly thing that only encouraged web stalking, and I never understood why anyone would want to spend time twittering, or letting others have such a wide window into their personal lives. Now I know why: …
It’s no secret that Japan and Korea have consumer phone technology light years ahead of everyone else, but I wonder if all of it is useful. Just as people have been going back and forth arguing about the use of HTML in emails, one could do the same about rich text formatting in SMS. One look at this SMS featurd in a Japanese drama makes me wonder if such a thing would …
I keep underestimating the Singaporean penchant for queues. Subway in Singapore’s been having a series of promotions to celebrate its 10th birthday, and today’s promotion was a 10-cent sub at all Subway outlets, between 3pm-4pm. Naively I thought I’d go and grab myself a cheap sandwich, only to be daunted by the long line that snaked around the Raffles City …
Apple just loves to do this to us. They release a nice new product (or a fantabulous new product, sometimes), and then just when we’ve all decided to go out and buy it, they release a newer version of the same product that’s somehow even cooler, but at exactly the same price so that we can all go kick ourselves for being early adopters. This time, it’s the …
I’m working on a plugin that adds some much-needed (IMHO) logging capabilities to WordPress 2.1 blogs. As such, I’m making heavy use of hooks and filters, and looking into the possibility of leveraging into the new pseudo-cron functionality in 2.1 to do scheduled exports of system logs. (more…)development, plugin, programming, software, wordpress Some …
