The end of my first full day in California.
Tired.
Ate at Jack in the Box for lunch, and McDonald’s for dinner. So far the food doesn’t seem to be much different from back home, though I am really liking the free refills for drinks and the better selection of drinks. Prices are nothing to phone home about. Well, it’s official: one of the first things I’ll be doing in my new job will be to fly to California for a two-week training stint. I’ll be there from 25 September to 6 October.
I’m rather excited; this will be the first time I’ve been to the USA in about twenty years. At the same time I must admit I’m a little nervous, what with the state …
With International Talk Like A Pirate Day just around the corner once again, it is indeed seemly that I post this video to a highly educational video which will help you to learn how to properly speak ‘pirate’. Unfortunately for myself, it seems I will be unlikely to participate this year as I will still be doing the night shift at Suntec City, leaving me with …

Over the past week or so I’ve been working as a desktop engineer, standing by to provide technical support for press, delegates and CSO members attending the WB/IMF Annual Meeting 2006 in Suntec City here in Singapore. Most of my time, especially now that I’ve been moved to the night shift, has been spent in the Press Centre where foreign journalists do their …
Now you know what FLOSS is, let’s talk about why FLOSS is so important. Apart from the abstract concept of freedom, which is very much related to the American ideal of freedom of speech, there are several tangible benefits to using FLOSS, some of...

There have been a few requests recently in #wordpress for a tarball of the current Subversion snapshot of WordPress, which WordPress itself doesn’t offer. So I put together a quick script and cronjob which will make a tarball of the WordPress Sub...
Avoid idleness, and fill up all the spaces of thy time with severe and useful employment: for lust easily creeps in at those emptinesses where the soul is unemployed and the body is at ease; no easy, healthful, idle person was ever chaste if he could.

Sieteocho notified me that BookMooch had removed the ability to search for books or members by location, which would naturally make it a whole lot more difficult to organise a Singapore BookMooch meet-up if I or any other person were to decide to organ...
Several weeks ago I read about a new site called BookMooch. It’s a book trading site, allowing book owners to trade books with each other, with the site as the middleman. It’s a really neat idea and I hope it takes off.
BookMooch works on ...
After my recent run-in with exceeded bandwidth I made the decision to switch hosts as soon as possible. 1and1 has been good to me, providing me with free decent hosting for nearly three years, but it’s time I got a proper hosting account again, e...

Just one or two nights ago my dad commented that the islandwide wireless internet access that had previously been announced was still nowhere to be seen. I didn’t remember hearing about that, but last night I saw an article on C|Net that mentione...
Here’s the long-delayed introduction to what FLOSS really is. In the software world we often talk about two kinds of freedom: free as in beer, and free as in speech. The first refers to software which are available for use at no financial cost: f...

Since I switched to KDE, the script I wrote previously to generate md5sum hashes with a GUI is now no longer as useful. It still works, but it uses the Gnome interface which I no longer use. So today I ported the entire script to KDE, using KDialog ins...
