That's the title of a book I read early this year, by two famous negotiators who had dealt with terrorists, political leaders and the like. It was a book on precisely what they did best: convince, persuade, and negotiate. For all their experience I found little insight in the book, since most of the stuff they talked about was pretty common sense. They even admited in the …

I recently heard from a friend that his neighbour had committed suicide, presumably from too much stress. No big deal, you might think, except that he was just 11 years of age, a Primary 5 student. It leads me to wonder: are children in Singapore subject to too much competition? Has the same competitive spirit that has driven Singapore forward now gone into …

I can't believe I just signed up for a marathon not 5 minutes after I Google-d it. The fact that it is already 3am and I haven't slept for almost 24hrs may have something to do with it. But really, how do you not sign up for a marathon with scenery like this:   It's in October this year, in Snowdonia, Wales. Time to start training!

Truth be told it didn't go too badly. I had to get the audience to keep down their laughter once or twice to continue my presentation. And the feedback I got after the presentation was pretty good (though no one would give negative feedback anyway, they're too polite). But due to a lack of preparation I wasn't sure how to cover the last few slides, and I stumbled over …

Am finally back in SG, after a 2-hour flight to Kuala Lumpur and a 5-hour bus ride to Johor Bahru. For once I'm thankful that I stay in Woodlands, just a 5-min bus ride from the checkpoint. With only a little over a week on the road, I wasn't able to do Kuala Lumpur justice at all, but the 5 days in Brunei let me see the other side of Brunei that I had missed during my …

The Facebook wall for the Asia Conference event which I blogged about earlier has come alive after the blog post. The post itself garnered over 50 comments, as did the entry on Tomorrow.sg. Acknowledging my skewed perspective on CHC, I've been following keenly all comments, looking to explore the other side of the argument that I was sure the very vocal members of CHC would …

Home values are down, consumer confidence is down, inflation is up, commodity prices are up.  But just when you thought it can't get worse...the value of your life goes down.  At least for …

I'll be heading for a two-week trip up to Malaysia, then Brunei, and back again. If you are one of my pals living in either country (seriously, I don't know who reads my blog these days), …

From Time: How Obama Did It Barack Obama was campaigning last October in South Carolina when he got an urgent call from Penny Pritzker, the hotel heiress who leads his campaign's finance committee. About 200 of his biggest fund raisers were meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, and among them, near panic was setting in...[Obama] was still running at least 20 points behind …

[Full disclosure: I used to be a (very enthusiastic) member of the church when I was 18, attending the myriad of cell group and prayer sessions that took up most of my time. The one year spent among the CHC crowd taught me plenty, though what I learnt was probably not what the church had in mind. By the end of the one year my beliefs in the CHC's idea of God had diminished to …

A classic article at the New Yorker from the unlikeliest of sources -- the "Annals of Medicine". Gruesome, fascinating and educational all at once, and covering a range of interesting topics, from the case of a woman who scratched her head so hard she scratched into her brain to how people born without limbs can nevertheless experience the phantom limb effect, and …

Beer session on Sunday night with Don and JH at BarBar Black Sheep, and the conversation degenerates into what all drunk men talk about: religion. Amidst all the very deep and insightful points (of course) that the three of us made, one particular question that JH posed has been gnawing at me these past few days: What drives us to continue living? He was conveying the …

The familiar humidity. The familiar mix of body odours that permeates every Woodlands-bound bus. The familiar (and illegal) fruit stall set up just outside Woodlands MRT. The familiar screech of parrots as I approach home. There was no one at home when I got back - it's my mum's birthday, so that was to be expected - so I snuck in via the back door. Not everything at home …

So the Singapore Society Christmas Dinner came and went yesterday. I myself am not exactly sure why it was held more than a month early from the actual date, but it was fun and that's all that counts. Charb and I were the emcees for the event, and we went as a Christmas elf and gnome respectively. He was Legolas and I was Gimli. No prizes for guessing where we got the names …
