As I was going home last night, I spotted this slip of paper under my door. I think it can easily qualify as the most dodgy looking piece of marketing material ever conceived by mankind.PS - The wet spot on the right isn't purposefully created to add to the filth. Rather it was created by me resting my wine glass on this direct mailer.

Every once in a while, you come across a clever bit of marketing which makes you smile. That's what happened to me today as I took my regular bus 166 back home.At first glance, it looks like any regular branded bus. Anybody can tell that Great Eastern Life is celebrating its 100th birthday. It looks like business as usual inside as you can see above.Heavily brand-oriented …

ACM is the proud venue host of Social Media Breakfast IIISocial media is what it is because people simply love to socialise. And boy did I get a major dose of that yesterday morning at Social Media Breakfast 3 (SMB3), courtesy of Daryl Tay, Claudia, and Derrick.SMB3 brainchild Daryl chatting with CullenHeld at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) through the sponsorship of …

Would you pay for a half hour comedy on Youtube? Or a nice fancy photograph gleaned from Flickr? How about donating perhaps a couple of bucks to Wikipedia for using information there? If you are like most people, the answer would be "no". In fact, I just heard that Google is still trying to profit from its multi-billion dollar acquisition of Youtube, which is bleeding …

Giving my two cents worth on Yesterday.sg At the kind invitation of Yi Xuan from SMU, I had the privilege of attending Podcamp 2.0 - an unconference of sorts organised by SMU, where doyens of the digital space proferred their views and insights on social media. Together with me were several bloggers and podcasters like Claudia, Melvin Yuan, Priscilla Tan, Daniel Tsou and …

To celebrate my dad's 68th and my niece's 10th birthday, my mum decided to book a restaurant for dinner last night at Tiong Bahru's Seng Poh Lane. Going by the unassuming name of Por Kee Eating House (porky?), the outlet was your typical old-fashioned Chinese restaurant with red plastic chairs and an outdoor al fresco eating area. It was as unpretentious as you can get, …

New age marketing maven Seth Godin in action (courtesy of ashbuckles)I have just finished reading the book "Meatball Sundae" by Seth Godin, my favourite marketing guru who was also called "the Ultimate Entrepreneur for the Information Age" by Business Week magazine. The main premise behind Seth's ideas is that the old advertising-led, "holler and they will come" world of mass …

Recently, my wife and I visited the Swanston Essential Store located at People's Park Complex to pick up some toiletries. Apparently, it has been quite an institution for the denizens of the Chinatown area.Anybody who need to purchase toiletries and cosmetic items will pop over now and then. They stock items like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, eye-liner and anything else which …

It was a starry starry night, with blogging stars and celebrity bloggers alike thronging the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) last night. ACM was all abuzz when the Omy Blog Awards was held at its River Room. Bloggers and social media users from all walks of life - students, young adults, mothers and fathers - gathered to participate in the event. It was a pretty …

Once in a while, you find the need to indulge in a streak of exhibitionism and hedonistic fun. It isn't always that one gets to do something that will turn heads in the public. First, we took Ethan along to East Coast Park, where he had fun cycling...We met with our good friends Clement, Amy and their 5 year old daughter Dyann, who is one of Ethan's best friends. Ethan, …

On my way to lunch today at the Jalan Besar area, I spotted this eye-catching sign which loudly declared that no aquatic and finned organism being served smelled fishy. Or that you wont' find them deplorable anyway.Upon closer inspection, I realised that the shop actually serves Nasi Lemak. This put to rest my initial thoughts that an ultra-enthusiastic and confident fish …

Henderson Waves Bridge courtesy of chooyutshingAfter viewing the launch of the Southern Ridges by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong last night on Channel News Asia, I felt an inner voice tell me that I need to run up those hills. Stretching across from Alexandra Road (Gillman area) to Telok Blangah Park and Mount Faber, there were three new linkways stretching 1.3 km long which …

Also known as the Golden Land, Myanmar is one of Southeast Asia's largest and probably least well explored country. Culturally rich and vibrant, it is the only country in our region where the traditional sarong is still worn daily as a modern attire. Due to its relative isolation and insulation from the modern world, Myanmar retains much of its heritage, traditional …

Kudos to Daryl Tay of Unique Frequency for addressing an issue which many know but few seem to want to bring to the forefront. And that is how the social media scene is performing in Singapore. He also highlighted an inspiring example on how Sea World uses social media marketing to its advantage. As one of the early purveyors of a corporate/ special interest blogs (namely …

This morning, as I was taking the lift from my home downstairs, I caught a man red-handed as he nonchalantly tossed a burning cigarette butt on to the floor. He probably didn't see me coming from behind.I immediately asked him in a polite but firm manner, "Excuse me sir, did you just throw that cigarette butt on the floor?"Caught unaware, he complained in a soft voice, …

As a botanist by training specialising in tropical ecology, I have always harboured a deep interest in nature. One of my favourite haunts was the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve - a small 410 acre area of lush primary rainforest, and probably the only place in Singapore where you can see tall towering dipterocarps in all their glory. Housing over 840 species of flowering plants …

Took this photo sometime in December last year from my regular bus stop. Very atypical of a hot tropical island like Singapore and I remembered how chilly the weather was then. Effects of climate change perhaps? Of course those days are long gone, and the weather has turned blazingly hot nowadays and suffocating even. Time to give up my car?
