Today is 10/10/10, on which day many people around the world are throwing the Global Work Party. Not to be confused with Worker's Party, this day is for celebrating solutions to climate problems. For example, in Maldives they are going to install solar panels on the President's office. You can see other ideas at www.350.org/workpart y-ideas There are Work Parties happening …

I've finished posting photos from my first roll of film at my photoblog, so now I am moving on to posting those from my second roll. It was a little disappointing, cos only 26 photos were developed compared to 35 from the 1st roll. I didn't employ a systematic way of experimenting, since not only were the films different, the lens setting was different, the developing labs …

On one hand we have public education videos and posters telling people not to board the train when the doors are closing, on the other hand they have this kind of advertisement on the platform screen door. Ah, they didn't say no running on station platform, so you can have your 4x100 relay for all you want. On a side note, once I was watching a Taiwanese movie and in it, the …

Saw this video clip of a robot selling ice cream in Japan. At first I thought it would be a cold metallic vending machine but no, it looks more like the auntie at McD's dessert kiosk! The robot actually picks up the cone, squeezes the ice cream from the machine, and adds the toppings. Cute Japanese version of Carmen as background music :P

As a kid I grew up playing Lego bricks. Whenever I went to the department store the first section I visited would be the toy section, and the first shelves I rushed to would be the Lego shelves. The number that caught my eyes wouldn't be the price tag, but the 4-digit serial number that comes with every Lego set. It wasn't so much about buying, but more of realizing what …

I was travelling in the lift with the girlfriend. When we reached the destination floor the door opened a few centimetres and stopped there. Me being me, tried to troubleshoot by pressing the door open and door close buttons, no response. Pressed the floor button, no response. Then the girlfriend gave the door a good kick. It opened. So who says brute force can't solve …

Went to see the Life Innovation by Japan's Robot Technologies at Japan Creative Centre. If you are expecting to see Gundam or Mazinger Z, you are on the wrong frequency. Co-organized by top Japanese companies and research institutions, the exhibition showcases some of their projects on robots and their possible integration in our daily life. I was quite intrigued by the …

When I started work at my current company, I found myself in this situation: I have 6 men officially under my charge, all of them older than me (the youngest is older than me by 8 years) and all of them more experienced than me. I describe myself as being air-dropped into the zone. It is a tricky situation. Like it or not, it is natural that some people will think they have …

Today is World Carfree Day. On this day, motorists are encouraged to put aside their cars and take public transport. I've always been a supporter of public transport (cos I don't drive, I can't drive, and I can't afford a car. That's besides the point). But if we decrease the number of cars on road, where do the people go? Public transport. Can our public transport support? …

Ok I can't take it anymore and have to bitch about someone. This kind of post has been missing from here for a while. I have this colleague at work who joined our company one week later than me. He just graduated from the other university with a second upper honours (wow. He made no effort in hiding it. He announced that he has a 2nd upper in a self-introduction on his first …

Went to watch the inaugural Singapore G1 at The Float @ Marina Bay. Organized by the Singapore Environment Council, this Green Grand Prix aims to encourage the development and use of green technologies in transportation in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. The interesting thing is, the F1 (the REAL Formula 1) is happening one week later on the same track as the G1. I was …

I recently finished reading the book Success through Failure by Henry Petroski. Judging from the title, you can guess that Petroski talks about building success on failures, from the design and engineering arena that is. He first talks about the evolution from Plato's Cave to PowerPoint slides that we are so familiar with today. He next talks about bigger scale things such …

I recently encountered two occasions when the bus's aircon broke down. The most recent one happened yesterday. I boarded this double-decker bus at Braddell towards Serangoon. The moment I was on the bus I could feel the trapped heat inside. So I went to the upper deck hoping that things would be better, and indeed it was cooler upstairs. As the bus moved along, a lady from …
