Have you wondered how does the Sentosa Express switch rail? Being a monorail system, the mechanism is slightly different from normal railway's switching mechanism and in my opinion it's quite spectacular. The other day I went to Sentosa and took this set of pictures:the track from the station leads to the right track, which goes to Sentosasomething's moving...this sure looks …

(disclaimer: since I am in one of the universities, this post may be biased)It's the time of the year for choosing university and 2 of the local top universities are all out to grab some gray matters. Advertisement in MRT stations, in printed media, in blogs (yeah yeah NTU ads appear in this blog. Where's NUS'?) Let's look at the different approaches employed by the 2 …

Sometimes it's not wise to always follow what they say to save the environment.Examples:They say switch off home appliances at the power socket, don't leave them on standby. So you unplug your refrigerator's power and only plug it in when you open the fridge door and need the light.Throw your mucus-soaked tissue paper into the paper recycling bin and your plastic sweet …

I've always wondered how bolts and nuts are made. Saw this video clip taken from Discovery's Science Channel which talks about how bolts and nuts are manufactured. Manufacturing processes and material science stuffs like rolling, forging, heat treatment, tensile test... things that we have learned in lectures. Engineering is so fun when you don't have to sit for exam.

Yesterday Alvin and I went to collect some parts from the contractor. On our way back walking towards the bus stop we saw the bus coming. Normally I don't chase after buses, but Alvin said "chase lah" and started running. With 2 pieces of heavy metal on the back I started running, overtaking Alvin and reached the bus stop before the bus arrived. Was about …

Recently I have switched from my old trusty Nokia 3120 to a Nokia E51.I don't usually spend on stuff that ain't edible, but at S$48 it was a real bargain. This candy bar (ironically I don't trust stuff that has too many mechanical components) has got a shiny stainless steel casing, 240 x 320 pixels screen, 2 megapixel camera, but what attracted me was the integrated WLAN …

Went to the Esplanade to catch Beatles go Baroque by re:mix, part of the Flipside series of performances.re:mix is a classical music ensemble whose members come together to play music during their spare time. It was kinda cool to see them playing the violin in jeans. Casual is good. Oh a few of the members are engineers =)They played 5 of Beatles pieces including Help, Girl, …

Ok away from all the machines that bore you, onto the streets of Guangzhou! That's Pearl River. Classic metal bridge. Pearl River, the other direction, a new bridge. Some very old buildings along the river. The street of Guangzhou. This isn't the worst in flow yet. I love the buses. Inside the tramway (or is it called trolley?) Basically it looks like a bus, but above the roof …

Attended Carte Noire's launch event "Sip" at Old School yesterday and it was an eye opener for me. Must be the fashion show models that opened my eyes =P. Carte Noire is a French coffee brand made from Arabica beans. The event started with the opening address, followed by fashion show featuring the designs by Romyda Keth. Pretty models =PNext up was foam art …

Logitech keyboard, NUS mug, Vietnamese drip coffee filter, Vietnamese civet coffee. The civet coffee does NOT keep you awake, so don't rely on it while mugging. My brother got me the filter and the coffee from his Vietnam trip some time ago. I got the NUS mug from the tuition fee hike.

As a person who writes blogs, sometimes I find myself making 2 very contradicting assumptions. One is that people read my blog, the other is that people don't read my blog. The first assumption about people reading my blog, is something like you assume people know what is happening to you. Take for example, recently I was bedridden and I received many messages asking me stuff …

Do they have like "pole dance society" as CCA in schools? This morning I was on a very crowded bus when this kiddo in National Junior College uniform shamelessly leaned on the grab pole which a few of the passengers were grabbing onto.We didn't give way. I think I'm like forever stuck with shapes.Yes it's so late in the semester and I still have project/assignment due.For this Mechanics of Thin-walled Structure question, I'm supposed to find the shear centre of the cross section.
