These have started poppping up at Geylang Serai market - they look like the Chinese bakchang but are made with chicken (S$1.50) or mutton (S$1.80) to replace the pork. Therefore halal bakchang! I was intrigued. How would they look like or taste? Hmm, when opened they still resemble the Chinese dumplings. The fillings are almost exactly the same, down to the boiled chestnut and …

Old school cendol in bubble-tea style sealed cup packaging (S$1.80, with ice). This stall offers chendol that's just coconut milk, gula melaka and cendol - and very importantly, the slim, light green cendol, not the garish, bright green, fat strips of flour. The way it used to be. None of the Chinese additions of red bean, cubed jellies and whatnot. Ah, would this be similar …

Bak kut teh (pork rib tea) is a comforting brew. If the authors of "Chicken Soup for the Soul" had been Asian, I bet they'd be tempted to name their work "Bak Kut Teh for the Soul". Plus, no crouton can beat our Asian fried you tiao! The best part sometimes, for me, are the sliced chillies in dark soy. The pork ribs become a vehicle for these babies, and plain white rice gets …

A "Hon Ni" Kitchen draws the queues!, originally uploaded by Camemberu. At the same hawker centre as the Chai Chee Minced Meat Noodles is this nasi lemak stall with a long, snaking queue. No way I'm gonna join that, I said to myself. But curiosity got the better of me, and I vaguely remembered an old news article about it. Besides, the nasi lemak looked rather tempting on the …

TasteSpotting.com, originally uploaded by Camemberu.I have been drooling! Over the past few days, I discovered a new source of food porn. Tastespotting.com is a website where you can share food-related photos that you totally dig. Oh and there are so many! The NotCot.org site is also very cool - lots of aesthetically stunning examples of design.

This is from a while back. Right after our feast of Istimewa Nasi Padang, my friends told me of a cheap but good molten chocolate cake just around the corner.Turns out it's from Cilantro's Bukit Merah stall, which seemed to be enjoying brisk business from the lunch crowd. Here's one table that seems to be sampling one of each of their desserts. The chocolate cake takes a while …

Yong Hup local snacks, originally uploaded by Camemberu. Are you a junk food junkie? What kind of snacks do you like? Me, all kinds. Two weeks ago, I revisited the website of local snack manufacturer Yong Hup which has been taking orders online and making deliveries islandwide for a few years now. Free delivery for orders of S$10 (each pack is S$2).I took a chance, to see how …

Profiterole, originally uploaded by Camemberu.Baked oysters Kirkpatrick, chicken cordon bleu, panna cotta and profiteroles. Items I never thought I'd see in my little hometown, where even basic Western fare is rare enough. My brother took us to this little cafe/diner on Sunday. It is air-conditioned and sparsely decorated but welcoming enough. I was surprised at the fairly …

Lots of fresh fish slices and leafy greens in a sumptuous broth, originally uploaded by Camemberu. This is quite a popular place for sliced fish soup, with queues forming even before lunchtime. One sip of the flavourful broth and you will understand why. It's sweet, umami and delicious! The fish is extremely fresh - none of that stale fishy smell. It's a healthy meal to boot …

I didn't have a good picture of Thunder Tea Rice when I first posted about it. So I went back again with my camera in tow this time. This traditional Hakka dish, also known as "Lei Cha Fan", is lauded as a health food, with the plethora of beneficial herbs and vegetables used. As for the taste, either you'll love it or you won't. I happen to like it, but no one else in my …

Sizzler's salad bar and steaks, originally uploaded by Camemberu.Sizzler has never been great. It still isn't. Their mains especially - our steaks were overdone and the ribs were dry. But the salad bar may have improved a wee bit compared to many years ago (the last time I visited!). You get about a dozen pre-mixed salads which are surprisingly edible. The section that looks …

Close-up of chopped shrimp fritters, originally uploaded by Camemberu. Finally, finally! Today I am trying the famous Indian rojak at Waterloo Street! It's almost an institution, a pioneer, must-try, so goes common lore. About fifteen items (fritters of various kinds, fried potatoes, tofu, eggs, cuttlefish) handmade the way it used to be in the 1960s at the very birthplace of …

Oosh at Dempsey has a new restaurant upstairs of its bar, launched just last month. It serves Modern European cuisine created by new Head Chef Zulkarnaini Dahlan who has undergone training by Michelin-starred Chefs Eric Guilbert from La Tour d'Argent, Paris and Gilles Marx from Taillevent, Paris for 7 years. Lai Lai Signature Beef Noodles, originally uploaded by Camemberu.Taiwanese treats abound at Lai Lai Family Restaurant on Liang Seah Street. This simple, cosy joint seems to be helmed by a young lady with a melodious (Taiwanese maybe?) accent. So many people have been asking me about the Ben & Jerry iPhone cover and how they can get one. I had to find the answer. The bad news is - it's not available anywhere except during Chunk Fest, which is over (boo hoo). They don't sell it at the scoop shops either! The good news is - I now have 10 of these to give away, thanks to the kind folks from Ben & Jerry itself! …

T3 serves up horrid pre-fried kway teow, originally uploaded by Camemberu.OK whatever you do, don't eat the char kway teow at the Airport Terminal 3 food court. I was shocked to see the cook take from a stash of pre-fried kway teow. He just warms it up and tosses in the final seafood ingredients. And then he charges you S$5 (minimum) for it!

A former colleague of mine (thanks, Adrian!) told me of a wondrous banana honey prata at an "ABC" coffeeshop in Joo Chiat. That was easily 5 years ago. I finally had the chance to try it - and oh my, I'm slapping myself for not coming earlier. Gooey sweet nectar and semi-caramelized bananas are so good together with crisp prata! Eat it while it's hot though, cos that's when …

Sik Wai Sin Eating House, originally uploaded by Camemberu.Sik Wai Sin is a stalwart of Cantonese cze-char (literally "cook and fry", denoting all-rounder cooked food usually served with rice or noodles) and is famous for its small but supposedly impressive repertoire of homestyle cooking.
