I have just finished my talk at BarCampSingapore on the topic "Uselessnism on the Web". I had quite a good audience and I am thankful for that. Strangely I did not time my talk but I finished in roughly 25 minutes, the amount of time speakers were allocated.

Looking through my site statistics today I found an interesting blog that linked to me. I visited World Lore and it appears that it has somehow managed to magically get the WordPress theme used on this site to appear on their site. The thing is I have not released this theme to the public.

I will be presenting and speaking at the third Barcamp Singapore on the 28th of February, which is a little over two weeks from now. In my session "Uselessnism on the Web", I will be talking about how "useless" and purely decorative design can affect online user experience and how we can embrace "utilism" and design not only usable but also enjoyable experiences.

I just came across this insightful article on FastCompany.com that Google has launched a network analysis service with a pair of non-profit organizations, to help regular users expose ISPs (Internet Service Providers) that are secretly degrading the connection speed of users.

YouTube has always been one of the sites I visit several times a day on a daily basis and I have watch it evolve and grow. One thing that strikes me as a designer is that how the homepage looks each time they have a redesign. The design revisions never appear finished and polished to me and often had me feeling if much thought had been put into aesthetics and to a certain …

I shot these pictures in July last year during a trip to Kuala Lumpur with Widgeous for Barcamp Malaysia 2008, over the three days we stayed there. The places I shot include Jalan Alor which is the street below the hotel we stayed in and the surroundings of the gigantaurus Petronas Towers.

I shot these photos at Singapore Changi Airport in June last year while walking from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1. The places I shot include construction sites, bus tunnels, lifts, roads and parking lots. The photos link to Flickr so be sure so open them in a new tab or something.

I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to design a site for a client who appreciated the virtues of simplicity and minimalism. The site acts as the corporate online presence for Ate Consulting and Ate Media. I handled everything from the conceptual design to the execution and production of the site, which includes the XHTML and CSS coding of the custom WordPress theme.

Two days ago I wrapped AEN UI in its new WordPress theme, which I took about three days to design and build. The new theme is aimed at improving the overall aesthetics and usability of the site. Some of the things I left out in the previous design, I learned that they were actually important so I put them back in.

Technology-driven design is having the solution before there is even a problem. Because of this, technology-design forces companies to invent problems (they call it innovation)…

Why plain bookmarks? The inspiration came after I read a book titled “Super Normal: Sensations of the Ordinary” co-written by Naoto Fukasawa and Jasper Morrison. The topics and philosophy on anonymous design discussed in the book resonated with me in a way no other design book had done before.

The background colors makes the dark text highly readable. Content is neatly organized into distinct rounded boxes which guides the eyes around the layout.
