If you have been following The Straits Times recently, you might have read this article about residents petitioning against the idea of converting a school campus into a dormitory for foreign workers in the serangoon area.I'm a resident in that area, and yes, when i first read about this, i couldn't say that i felt welcoming towards that idea. Apprehension, anxiety and skepticism - these were my initial feelings.Firstly, i was worried about the change in the noise level upon the establishment of this dormitory. We residents have been enjoying the peacefulness and tranquility in our neighbourhood, something which i feel is one of the main attributes which draw new residents. I can sit at my porch and read a book, without fearing to be disturbed by people walking by (of course, you get exceptions like noisy teenagers from time to time). I wasn't sure whether the noise level could be maintained if foreign workers were to move in into our neighbourhood.Secondly, there is this sense of trepidation about the maids
