I went to watch Sutra last night! Thank you Weiliang for the gala performance tickets :) This was definitely 1 of the dances in the Singapore Arts Festival program that caught my eye because of the mix of martial arts discipline and contemporary abstractness. It was a bit surreal to see Shaolin Monks wearing western suits, dancing to the live, classical ensemble. It's the East-meets-West again.Wushu has always been choreography in its own right, but there has been many a debate as to whether wushu is really a type of dance. Elements in wushu have lent themselves to traditional Chinese dance and even modern dance but is more widely viewed as a form of self-defense. Last night, nobody could say that what these Shaolin monks were doing was not dance.In a dynamic set with ingenious use of wooden boxes, which were fit together to form a maze one moment and quadraple-decker beds the next moment, it was a free flow of brilliant and carefully thought out blockings and visual spectacles.At one point it felt like i w
