Standard Chartered's “Parking Lot” Print Ad in The Straits Times
The front cover and inside page of today’s “home” section of The Straits Times ran a Standard Chartered ad that left us very confused. The front cover is excellent, reading “Give your old car a new parking lot” – a very interesting slogan that is suitably ambiguous (combined with the picture of the container) to make you want to find out more. The use of blue and green hues is also a clear, albeit tacit indication that this is the work of Standard Chartered. Have a look at the front cover (top) and the inside page (bottom) at the bottom of this post. Turning the page, however, you are met with “You want a new car / we give you the perfect excuse”. When both slogans (on the front and inside pages) are read in conjunction with the body copy, none of them appear to make any sense. The body copy tells you that Standard Chartered are giving away five cars to people that deposit or invest more than $5,000 with them.
