Reunion

My mother is candid and with this comes thought provoking nuggets of wisdom like this one which I am going to share right now. When my grandmother passed away, my mother said this - brothers and sisters are strangers with the same mother, and how very true this can be sometimes. Past CNYs have normally started with my mother packing us of into the car for a short ride to our Grandma's place. There, while waiting for the rest of my maternal relatives to arrive, we'ld snack on the trays and turn tables of traditional CNY goodies. Peanut cookies, kueh bang kit, prawn rolls, pineapple tarts and crunchy koi shaped agar agar that my Grandma would religiously make and then sun every year. Grandma would be wearing a Peranakan sarong kebaya with her freshly permed hair, all smiles as she hands out her second red packet to each of her grandchildren. She gives us one before CNY, I'm not sure why, but she does anyway. It's hard not to like your grandparents. The greedy few of us would camp at the dining table and wait
