Olympians and Paralympians will never be the same

It warms my heart to know that our medal winning Paralympians will be awarded state medals for their effort. Gutsy Laurentia Tan, who won two bronze will be awarded Public Service Medal, while Yip Pin Xiu who won a gold and a silver will be awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. It was announced that our ping pong girls will be awarded Meritorious Service Medals. Over the past weeks, readers of the Straits Times had written in to question the rationale of awarding less money to the medal winners of the Paralympic Games. The latest is the online forum letter by Ms Hazel Chew. They've got a point. Why should we be treating our paralympians differently when they've won medals, trained harder, and probably have to endure even more upheavels in life ? Nature has been unfair to them, but as a civilized society, we should seek to equalize the unfairness in nature. To fend for the weak, to help the poor, and to provide equal opportunities for all. That said, one can also easily see why the rewards are so different.
