Watched Muallaf at The Picturehouse Cathay yesterday. I can’t say for sure that this is the best work from Yasmin (I still cling on to the wonderfully simple Sepet) but definitely a worthy one made. There are many characters, and each of them either evoke past memories or post new perspective of life, be it from a religion or family point of view.The film brings upon opposite questions and views. You see the ‘approved’ and ‘unapproved’ home-runaways meet, how they find each other weird and/or interesting. One find it difficult to understand why the other inflict pain on himself and his mom, the other find it intriguing how someone can keep forgiving everyone every single night. And there’s the Datuk father who can’t keep himself off the ‘evils’ of Islam and his children who can’t have enough of sociology of religion, there’s the stuck-in-between-and-don’t-know-what-to-do stepmom and always-awaiting mom.Ultimately, Yasmin believe
