I know that the recent proposed pay hike is not just for the ministers but it is also a review for the civil service sector. However, inevitably the focused will be on the ministers pay. The amount of salary that our ministers are drawing is a staggering amount that many of us, the heartlanders, find it hard to comprehend. For example, at $1.2 million, it'll take a person whose annual income is $40k, 30 years to earn the same amount. At $2.2 million (a staggering 83% increased), well, usually we won't make that amount in our lifetime what the ministers draw in a year.Firstly, the timing of the announcement was bad. It was made soon after the announced 2% increased in GST. Again, inevitably, this will lead people to think that the increased taxes from the GST is to fund the increased salaries.
