Mandarin Gallery Grand Opening in The Straits Times

In the main section of today’s Straits Times, Mandarin Gallery ran a full-page ad informing the public of their grand opening on 28th January. Whilst we generally applaud the aesthetic conveyed – that of artistry and sophistication – we have two observations regarding the body copy. It reads as follows: “For the fashion connoisseur and the epicurean, for the artists of their lives, a grand experience of exquisite labels and fine dining awaits at Mandarin Gallery”. First, the line “for the artists of their lives” is completely nonsensical. It speaks to the “fashion connoisseurs" and "epicureans”, yet what exactly is an “artist” of their life? Someone that circumscribes fashion and culinary choices upon an individual? Family? God? Beyond these (admittedly exaggerated) suggestions, we simply have no idea. These words hold no value, and could even be seen as detrimental to the overall message conveyed. Removing them would therefore strengthen, rather than weaken the body copy, i.e.
