Is there too much competition in schools today?
I recently heard from a friend that his neighbour had committed suicide, presumably from too much stress. No big deal, you might think, except that he was just 11 years of age, a Primary 5 student. It leads me to wonder: are children in Singapore subject to too much competition? Has the same competitive spirit that has driven Singapore forward now gone into overdrive, and causing more harm than good? This is an awkward question for me to ponder, since the school of economic thought I follow is strongly pro-competition - the more competitive it is, the better. In fact, the optimal structure in economics is that of 'perfect competition' - an infinitely competitive situation with absolutely no room for any of those involved to breathe. But the costs of increased competition, in the form of less leisure and increased pressure have been largely ignored. And in this case they fall on the most vulnerable part of the population - the children. Adults may complain of the price inflation that runs rampant
