Advance Medical Directive
Recently the Advance Medical Directive (AMD) Act was in the Singapore news. In his speech to Parliment, Minister for Health, Mr Khaw Boon Wan higlighted some real issues regarding death. In our society, death is mostly regarded as a taboo issue. However, it would be informative if more of us knew or can control how we die. This is very different from euthanasia, which is the act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment.AMD focuses on palliative medicine, which is relieving or soothing the symptoms of a disease or disorder without effecting a cure. The Act's basic intention is to provide one with the legal choice of not wanting any extraordinary life-sustaining treatment to be used to prolong your life, in the event you become terminally ill and unconscious.New advances in medical knowledge and technology create new choices for both patients and health care providers.
