"Rio's Beaches and Bullets": Editorial necessity in The Straits Times
In the “life!” section of today’s Straits Times, the lead article, written by Lee Jin Pyn and entitled "Rio's Beaches and Bullets" provides a traveller's account of Rio de Janeiro – one of the most well known, and loved cities in Latin America. The aim of this post is to point out why this article should not have been published. In pointing out the author’s biased prejudices we hope to highlight the necessity of editorial control over what is, and what is not effective travel journalism. This is not a criticism of the author – if it is conceived as such, then it is with regret. Ultimately we are bewildered as to why The Straits Times would publish an article that shows little, if any, interest in or understanding of Rio’s society, culture or traditions (although wildlife is a notable exception).
